MJAP Awarded Another Five Year Term

Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals' Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) has been awarded another five year term under the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief II (PEPFAR II) to continue providing the excellent services they have been offering in Mulago and Mbarara Hospitals and their catchment areas including Butabika hospital. Technical assistance for this work will be through the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

MJAP is a program of Makerere University College of Health sciences under the School of Medicine (Formerly Faculty of Medicine)and is implemented in partnership with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) as well as Mulago and Mbarara Teaching Hospitals.

Since 2004, MJAP, one of Uganda's leading HIV/TB Programs has been providing comprehensive HIV/TB services in Mulago and Mbarara Teaching hospitals, several lower level facilities and in seven Regional Referral Hospitals of Jinja, Soroti, Mbale, Kabale, Masaka, Fort Portal, and Hoima.

This award comes to boost what has already been a leading model of HIV prevention, care and treatment and the activities will be implemented in line with the PEPFAR II principles of health systems strengthening, strengthening local ownership, efficiency, etc.

In an email to all staff, the Program Manager Dr. Jennifer Namusobya thanked all the staff who have worked very hard to ensure that the great services offered by the program continue.

MJAP Celebrates Five years

MJAP that was established in November 2004 with funding from the United States of America Presidential Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and technical assistance from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) made five (5) years on 31st March 2010.

MJAP has been a leader in the provision of life saving interventions for HIV/AIDS patients in Uganda especially in the two National referral teaching hospitals of Mulago and Mbarara and within seven regional referral hospitals of Mbale, Soroti, Fort Portal, Masaka, Kabale, Hoima and Jinja.

MJAP is glad to continue adding value to the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS.

This would not have been possible without the support of partners and the Ministry of Health.

 

MJAP FAMILY DONATES RELIEF ITEMS TO BUDUDA BROTHERS AND SISTERS

The Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals' Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) family in yet another effort to reach out to those in need have done it. Over the last two weeks MJAP employees have solicited items from within and without to be donated to their brothers and sisters in Bududa.

Bududa recently hit news headlines when a land slide covered a village harboring over 300 people. About 90 bodies have been recovered and many more are missing and those that have survived are in desperate need of life saving interventions like food, clothing and Shelter.

The Media has reported that many people are homeless after their houses where eroded in the catastrophic mud slide that covered their homes and left the people with nowhere to run to.

MJAP together with Nation Media group and UCHUMI supermarket have combined efforts for relief and today Thursday 18th March 2010 the MJAP Program Manager Dr. Jennifer Namusobya, accompanied by Dr. Doris Mwesigire Assistant program manager Capacity Building, Ms. Goreti Akidi the Training manager, Mr. Otieno William, Senior Driver and Mr. Moses Karugaba the Public relations officer handed over the items to the Nation Media group and UCHUMI Supermarket who will in turn deliver them at the end of this week.

In her own words, Dr. Namusobya said “I would like to send my heartfelt gratitude to the staff of MJAP in Mbarara, and Mulago for having very big hearts and for giving selflessly to those in need. We also thank Nation media group, UCHUMI Supermarket, the Uganda Red Cross and all those companies that have put some time and resources aside for the help of our brothers and sisters in Bududa.” She added “The material items we have given are not enough and we need to include the bududa people in our prayers and pray that they can have a normal life soon”

The Nation Media representative Ms. Grace Nyamahunge was very pleased with the amount of relief efforts that she said “We thank MJAP for the big heart; we know that your efforts will go along way into assisting the Bududa people. We are glad to be partnering with MJAP on this humanitarian activity”

MJAP is a leading HIV/AIDS care and treatment program that started in 2004 with funding from the USA Presidents Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and technical assistance from Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) and has so far reached out to more than 500,000 people for HIV Counseling and testing and provides care to more than 40,000 HIV Patients.

 

STANDING WITH OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN BUDUDA

MJAP staff and Friends will be combining efforts for relief towards the people of Bududa who were at the start of this week buried in a landslide in over three villages on the slopes of Mt. Elgon. By Wednesday, at least 81 bodies had been recovered. Rescuers including officials from the Uganda

Red Cross put the figure of the missing persons at 350. We are therefore calling upon all of us to reach out to our brothers and sisters with anything in their support and we shall hand it over to the Uganda Red Cross. MJAP SUPPORTS CBDOTS IN DISTRICTS

MJAP has donated over 50 microscopes in support of CBDOTS in the seven districts of operation. The Microscopes have been given to the district health Leadership.

The LCV Vice chairperson for Masaka district presided over the function in Masaka at the district town Hall with over 4 health units benefiting from this activity namely, Kitovu hosptial and Masaka regional referral hospital among others.

In a related development, Soroti and Hoima districts also are among the districts that benefited from this offer. This was in support of CBDOTS especially in health center IVs.
