Background

Since 2004, MJAP has been a leader in the provision and scaling up of HCT, Basic HIV/AIDS care, TB/HIV integrated services, ART including Post exposure prophylaxis and support for victims of sexual and Gender based violence in the two largest national teaching hospitals and several satellite clinics with funding support from PEPFAR.

Mulago-Mbarara Teaching Hospitals’ Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) is a program of Makerere University School of Medicine, and works with a number of partners to implement quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment in Mulago and Mbarara University Teaching hospitals. The Program was established in November 2004 with funding from CDC-PEPFAR to provide quality HIV testing and care at Mulago and Mbarara Teaching Hospitals, and their catchments and, to strengthen the two institutions’ capacity for the provision of these services. MJAP implements comprehensive HIV/AIDS programs in the two major teaching hospitals and their catchment areas and in seven Regional Referral Hospitals (RRHs). The Program collaborates with the Ministry of Health (MoH), the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program (NTLP), and indirectly through the host institutions leverages resources from the Global Fund (GFTAM). Currently, MJAP is working with a variety of other collaborators and partners hosted by MoH such as Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Baylor College of Medicine, Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), Protecting Families Against HIV/AIDS (PREFA), and health units such as Regional referral Hospitals (RRHs), Mulago TB Unit, Mbarara Municipal Council, Kampala City Council (KCC) health centers and many others.
